Twain holds your journal, so the important terms are short: what you write is yours, we never take a copy, and Twain is a companion rather than a professional of any kind.
These terms are an agreement between you and xVentures Global Ltd ("we", "us"), covering the Twain iOS app and the website at thetwain.app. By downloading or using Twain you accept them. If you do not, please do not use it.

We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use Twain on Apple-branded devices that you own or control, as permitted by the Usage Rules in Apple's Media Services Terms and Conditions. The licence is for your own use. You may not sell, rent, sublicense or redistribute the app, and you may not copy, reverse engineer or attempt to derive its source code except to the extent that applicable law expressly permits it.
We keep all rights we do not expressly grant you. Twain, the Twain wordmark and the design of the app remain ours.
Everything you write, photograph and store in Twain is yours. We claim no ownership of it and no licence over it.
Twain stores your pages on your device. We do not receive them, we hold no copy, and there is no account containing them. When you ask Twain to read a page or answer a question, that material is sent to an AI provider to fulfil your request and returned. This is set out in full in our Privacy Policy, which forms part of these terms.
Because your journal exists only on your device, keeping a backup is your responsibility. If you delete the app, reset your device or lose it, and you have no device backup, your journal cannot be recovered by you or by us.
Twain reads your handwriting and writes back about what it finds. Two things follow from that.
It can be wrong. Handwriting recognition and AI-written reflections are interpretations, not facts. Twain may misread a word, mistake a date, attribute something to the wrong person, or draw a connection that is not there. Check anything that matters before relying on it.
It is not professional advice. Twain is not a therapist, a doctor, a counsellor, a lawyer or a financial adviser, and nothing it writes is medical, psychological, legal or financial advice. It is not a medical device and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any condition. Do not use it as a substitute for professional care.
If you are in crisis, contact your local emergency services. In the UK you can call 999, or Samaritans free on 116 123 at any hour. Twain cannot help in an emergency and does not monitor what you write.
Use Twain lawfully. In particular, do not use it to store or process material that is unlawful, and do not use it to infringe anyone else's rights. Do not attempt to break, overload or gain unauthorised access to the app, our relay or our website, and do not use Twain to develop a competing product.
Twain is private by design. Nothing you write is shared with other users, and there is no social feed, no public profile and no way for anyone else to see your pages through Twain.
Twain uses Anthropic's Claude to read handwriting, and optionally OpenAI to write some of its reflections. If you supply your own API key, your use of that key is governed by your agreement with that provider, and any charges they make are yours to pay. We are not responsible for their availability, pricing or output.
Beta builds may instead route requests through our relay so that testers do not need a key. We may change, limit or withdraw that at any time.
Twain is currently provided free of charge while in beta. We may introduce paid features in future; if we do, you will be told the price before you are asked to pay anything, and any purchase will be made through Apple, subject to Apple's terms and refund policy.
We may change, suspend or discontinue Twain, or any part of it, at any time. Beta software may contain defects, and features may change or disappear between builds.
You may end it at any time by deleting the app. We may suspend or end your licence if you materially breach these terms. Sections 02, 03, 08 and 10 survive the end of this agreement.
Nothing in these terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited.
If you are a consumer, you have legal rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 and other consumer protection law, and nothing here affects them. Twain must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described. We are responsible for loss you suffer that is a foreseeable result of our breaking these terms or failing to use reasonable care and skill, but not for loss that is not foreseeable.
If you are using Twain in the course of a business, we exclude all implied warranties to the extent the law allows, we are not liable for loss of profit, business, goodwill or data, and our total liability to you is limited to the greater of the amount you have paid us for Twain in the twelve months before the claim, or one hundred pounds sterling.
We are not liable for loss of journal content. Your pages are on your device and backing them up is your responsibility, as set out in section 02.
Apple requires the following, and it forms part of this agreement.
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction. If you are a consumer resident elsewhere in the UK or in the EEA, you keep the benefit of any mandatory protections and the right to bring proceedings in the courts of the country where you live.
We may update these terms. The date at the top always shows the current version, and we will tell you in the app before a material change takes effect. Continuing to use Twain afterwards means you accept the updated terms.
